More than just a name change, this evolution highlights an element that has always been part of the brand’s identity: Alfred, the iconic gnome of Le Petit Dep.
A natural evolution of the concept
Over time, the concept has evolved beyond its original definition, combining a coffee offering with a more comprehensive dining experience, including evening service.
“We felt it was the right time to update the name so that it better reflects what the concept has become today. Alfred more clearly and coherently brings together the café and snack bar aspects.”

Alfred, a symbol at the heart of our identity
More than ten years ago, the first café opened in Old Montreal, laying the foundation for a distinct visual and cultural identity. A few years later, Alfred emerged as a symbolic figure: a discreet guardian of the space, its values, and its products. Over time, he has become a unifying force within the group.
Today, Alfred is featured throughout the brand: in three Le Petit Dep cafés Le Petit Dep two snack bars; appearing on cups, gourmet food products, and merchandise. The name Alfred was not chosen at random. Of Anglo-Saxon origin (“elf” and “counsel”), it evokes both wisdom and imagination—that of a discreet, benevolent, and almost magical presence. Just like the gnome who embodies him, Alfred simply watches over the experience, the products, and the atmosphere of our venues. Renaming the refreshment stands “Alfred” is a logical next step, reinforcing a consistent identity across all locations.
