Griffintown wasn't always the vibrant neighborhood we know today.
At the end of the 19th century, its streets were noisy, chaotic, teeming with workers, taverns… and dark tales. It was here, in the heart of this bustling nightlife, that a woman named Mary Gallagher made her mark on history.
On June 27, 1879, her life was turned upside down.
In a small house in the neighborhood, a violent altercation broke out.
Mary was brutally murdered… beheaded.
The crime shocks Montreal. Soon, a woman is accused: Susan Kennedy, an acquaintance—perhaps a rival.
But that's not the end of the story.
A familiar presence returns…
Ever since that night, a rumor has been passed down through the generations.
It is said that Mary Gallagher never left Griffintown.
That her spirit returns… again and again.
Every seven years, on the exact date of her death—June 27—some people claim that she reappears at the corner of William and Murray Streets.
Wandering through the night, searching for what had been torn from him. His head.
A Legend Still Going Strong
Over time, its story has become one of Montreal's most famous legends.
Witnesses say they saw her.
Others chose not to venture out that night.
But one thing is certain: in Griffintown, the past never completely fades away.
